DHAKA: Bangladesh Cricket said Wednesday it is in talks with the ICC over moving its T20 World Cup matches out of India. The request follows India’s forced exit of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL, raising security concerns in Dhaka.
The World Cup is set to begin on February 7, with Bangladesh scheduled to play four group matches in India. Senior Bangladesh Cricket Board official Nazmul Abedeen Fahim said discussions with the ICC are ongoing to find a practical and safe solution for the team.
The BCB emphasized its commitment to ensuring the team’s safety, security, and well-being. It said it will continue constructive engagement with the ICC and event authorities to facilitate smooth participation in the tournament.
Tensions between India and Bangladesh have escalated following a 2024 mass uprising in Dhaka, which toppled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. India condemned what it described as hostility against minorities, while Bangladesh’s interim leadership accused India of exaggerating the situation.
Mustafizur Rahman, who had been bought for over $1 million by Kolkata Knight Riders, was released from the IPL on the Indian cricket board’s advice. Bangladesh’s request to relocate World Cup games highlights ongoing diplomatic friction affecting sports ties.
