NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran to end months of conflict in West Asia, expressing hope that the development would contribute to regional peace, stability and the smooth functioning of global trade routes.
In a post on X platform, without mentioning Pakistan which had brokered the peace deal, Modi described the agreement as a positive step after a conflict that had caused significant economic disruption worldwide and resulted in loss of life across several countries.
“I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries,” Modi wrote.
He also underlined the importance of restoring stability in the region and safeguarding international commerce, particularly at a time when the conflict had affected one of the world’s most important maritime trade corridors.
“India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce,” he mentioned.
Modi expressed optimism that discussions on unresolved issues would eventually lead to a broader and lasting settlement. “We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement,” Modi added.
The Indian prime minister’s comments came after US and Iranian officials announced that they had reached an agreement aimed at ending their war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global oil and gas shipments.
While the agreement remains a preliminary framework, it represents the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since the conflict began following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February.
